Luke Humphries has defended himself and Luke Littler following sharp criticism from Dennis Priestley about their World Cup of Darts performance. The England pair faced backlash after their unexpected exit from the tournament.
Humphries responded on Friday to accusations that they had "let their country down" with a pointed message on X, formerly Twitter. The world champion also defended his younger team-mate against suggestions they were undeserving of recent honours.
Littler posted his own response on Instagram, though he subsequently deleted it. The 17-year-old's message appeared to challenge Priestley's assessment of their achievements.
The controversy erupted after England's shocking first-round elimination in Frankfurt earlier this week.
Luke Littler and Luke Humphries have both responded to criticism following the World Cup of Darts
PAEngland entered the World Cup of Darts as overwhelming favourites but suffered a stunning 8-4 defeat to Germany in their opening match. The loss came just days after both players received MBEs in the King's Birthday Honours.
Priestley, a two-time World Championship winner, did not mince his words about the performance. "Luke Littler and Luke Humphries let their country down at the World Cup of Darts," he said.
The former professional suggested the pair's recent honours were premature. "To be brutally honest, I don't think either Luke Littler or Luke Humphries have done enough to earn their MBEs just yet," Priestley stated.
He added that both players could warrant such recognition in time but felt it was too early in their careers.

Humphries took to social media with a robust defence of their performance. "Disappointing to hear a top former pro who I admired say such a damaging thing to me and Luke," he wrote on X.
The world champion reminded critics of his previous success, adding: "I didn't let my country down last year tho did I? One bad game for us and we will back next year to go again. Let's move on now."
LATEST SPORTS NEWS:
Littler's deleted Instagram post was more direct in challenging Priestley. "Doesn't deserve an MBE but done more in 12 months than he ever did... that's what I would say anyway," the teenager wrote before removing the message.
Priestley expanded on his criticism by comparing the current pair's preparation unfavourably to his own partnership with Phil Taylor. "From what we've heard, they weren't sitting together or practising together," he claimed.

The former champion contrasted this with his own approach: "When I was playing in pairs with Phil Taylor we practised together and sat together, we played all over the world and I only remember us getting beaten once."
Regarding Littler's MBE specifically, Priestley acknowledged the teenager's impact on darts' popularity but maintained his position. "Littler has been recognised for raising the popularity of darts which is great, but he can still do so much more," he said.
